What is Invisalign
The Invisalign® system is an orthodontic tools designed to help patients achieve straighter teeth. This cosmetic dental procedure uses clear, plastic aligners to gradually move the teeth into place. The system is different than traditional braces because it is not metal and the aligners are virtually invisible when worn. The aligners are made specifically for each person using digital x-rays and impressions.
How do the Aligners Straighten Teeth?
While each person’s treatment plan will be unique, the doctor will customize a plan and collect x-ray and impressions for each patient. The aligners are then made to fit those specifications using BPA-free plastic which is comfortable and smooth. Patients wear the aligners every day and remove them to eat, brush, and floss. As the aligners continue to be worn, the patient’s teeth gradually shift into their final position. The aligners are typically changed every two weeks and should be worn for at least 20 to 22 hours a day to be effective. The process can take anywhere from one to two years.
What Advantages do the Invisalign® Aligners Offer?
While metal braces cannot be removed during the process and frequently cause patients to develop sores from the brackets and wire rubbing on the inside of the person’s mouth, Invisalign® aligners do not do this. The soft plastic aligners fit comfortably in the patient’s mouth without rubbing. The aligners are also removable which makes maintaining good oral hygiene habits much easier. Aligners may not be right for every person however. To determine which is the best fit for you, talk with the doctor about your alignment goals and budget.
